The symptoms of otitis media in infants and young children are pulling or scratching at the ear, often accompanied by:

  • Hearing problems
  • Fever
  • Ear drainage
  • Crying, irritability
  • Vomiting
However, symptoms of irritability and rubbing the ear(s) do not necessarily indicate the presence of an infection or significant ear problems. A thorough examination and symptom survey can help your physician arrive at an accurate diagnosis and avoid the unnecessary use of antibiotics.

In older children and adults, the symptoms of otitis media include:

  • Earache
  • Hearing problems
  • Feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
  • Fever
  • Ear drainage
  • Dizziness, loss of balance
  • Vomiting or nausea
In addition, symptoms without pain or fever can also indicate chronic or recurring fluid in the ear, and should be investigated.
