Chronic bad breath (halitosis)

Occasionally, chronic bad breath (halitosis) can be caused by infected adenoids. Tiny folds and pockets in the adenoids called crypts can trap food particles and debris.

The trapped food particles can then decay and promote bacterial growth, causing foul-smelling breath. If the adenoids are the source of halitosis, an adenoidectomy may be recommended.

However, removing the adenoids will not resolve halitosis if it is caused by bacterial problems in other areas of the mouth (gums, teeth, etc.). If you suffer from chronic halitosis, your doctor and dentist can help determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
