Adenoidectomy | Tonsillectomy | Combined Technique

Traditional T&As

A conventional T&A procedure today routinely consists of a Bovie tonsillectomy and a curette adenoidectomy. This procedure is basically effective and safe, but it completely exposes the sensitive throat muscles beneath the tonsils, causing considerable pain and inflammation. It is also less precise, which increases the risk of injury to adjoining tissues.

The severe pain prolongs recuperation and can cause dehydration. The lack of precision can lead to a hypernasal voice. And the complete removal of tonsil tissue can contribute to delayed postoperative bleeding.

Occasionally these complications will necessitate hospital readmission. According to Koltai et al, up to 4% of patients who have a traditional T&A procedure must be readmitted to the hospital for dehydration. And up to 4% of conventional T&A patients have to go back to the hospital for delayed postoperative bleeding.
