Tonsillectomy techniques

Today, tonsillectomies are primarily performed to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children. Adults have their tonsils removed more often to treat infectious problems, but many undergo the procedure for OSA as well.

There are a variety of methods for removing the tonsils, including:

  • Cold steel
  • Radiofrequency
  • Powered intracapsular
  • Other
Cold steel
In this method, stainless steel scissors or a scalpel are used to remove the tonsil tissue from between two muscles in the back of the throat. Learn more.

Most tonsillectomies today are performed using a Radiofrequency device. Learn more.

Powered intracapsular
This new technique uses a microdebrider (pronounced "MI-cro-duh-BREE-der"), a powered instrument with a very small rotating tip. Learn more.
