There are three kinds of sleep apnea, with obstructive sleep apnea being the most common.

Obstructive sleep apnea is when your body attempts to breathe during sleep, but the upper airway is physically blocked or obstructed in some way by your anatomy.

In central sleep apnea, the airway is not physically obstructed, but there is a problem with the part of the brain that controls breathing, and your body does not receive the signal from the brain to breathe.

When a combination of both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea is present, it is called mixed sleep apnea.
